Which Pressure Washer Do I Need?

Its time to clean your driveway! I know it’s something you have been dreaming about for weeks, dreaming of warmer days when you could finally get a pressure washer and blast the old leaf stains, oil drips, and dirt that has collected on your home, deck and driveway over the last few years. You are trying to spruce things up a bit, improve the curb appeal, and do some spring cleaning to your home’s exterior. Well, the time is here, but how do you know which pressure washer you need?

We’ll start with the basics. You have to choose between gas and electric. For many this is an easy choice, but there are pros and cons to both. Electric pressure washers are small, lightweight, and easy to move and store, but often don’t pack a whole lot of punch. They are great for small areas or light cleaning, but these units may not have the power to handle the tougher jobs. The other option is gas, but this is where it gets complicated. Gas units vary in sizes and specifications so widely they are hard to group together, however, gas units are generally more powerful than the electric units, but are bulkier, heavier, and a bit more complicated.

For light duty cleaning, many people choose electric pressure washers. These are great for cars, decks, porches and siding. The higher pressure electric pressure washers can even do a decent job cleaning a driveway, although they may not remove every tough oil stains. For heavy duty cleaning, such as extremely dirty driveways, I would recommend a gas pressure washer and more specifically, a model that runs 2600 – 3000 psi. The model I chose for my home is the Karcher G 3025, 3000 PSI, 2.5 GPM, unit. This pressure washer packs a ton of power into a relatively small, easy to store, design, and includes a 25’ high pressure hose and 5 tips for various pressure applications. The Karcher G 3025 (3050, for reconditioned) also features a Honda GC 190 engine, a siphon tube for soap and cleaners, and a commercial grade spray wand and trigger gun.

Bosch Daredevil Spade Bits

I know I spend a lot of time writing about all the cool tools we have here at CPO. Today however, I have to tell you about the coolest, fastest, cleanest spade drill bits I have ever used. Bosch recently released a new line of spade bits (paddle bits) that is absolutely incredible. I have to admit I was skeptical at first. Seriously, it’s a spade bit, how much can you change? Let me tell you, A LOT!

Bosch has completely redesigned the way spade bits are made. They started with a full cone threaded tip for faster and easier drilling, and followed that with a patented contoured paddle. This wave-like shape, removes chips faster and contributes to faster drilling speeds as well. But Bosch didn’t stop there; the bit also includes a patented spur remover and reamer design that that has angled cutting edges to reduce breakout and leave cleaner exit holes than any other competitive bit.

While drilling holes this weekend through both studs and the top plate of my kitchen extension, I got to see the benefits of these features first hand. I am no longer a skeptic, and have replaced my worn out spade bit set with the DareDevil Spade bit set. Check it out here!

Are you ready for Spring?

Are you ready for spring? I most definitely am. After being shut inside for the last 3 months with one of the coldest winters in 25 years, I am totally ready to get out in the yard. Well, maybe not totally ready. I have been reviewing my tools, and although I try to keep them maintained and in good working order, it is now time to replace a few. So on that note, here is a list of the basics I think most people need for proper lawn maintenance. First, and probably most important, is a string trimmer, and although there a multitude of models, I prefer a 2 stroke gas engine, with 2 strings and a straight shaft. Additionally, I really like the models that are attachment capable, so I do not need to buy a new engine with every tool, but simply change the accessory I would like to use next. So, the 2nd most important on my list would be an Edger attachment. This attachment easily connects to the same motor that runs your new string trimmer. Simply disconnect the trimmer and reconnect the edger. A blade edger is essential to maintaining a beautifully manicured lawn. This tool allows you to sculpt the edges of your sidewalks, driveway, and flowerbeds for a fine manicured finish. The 3rd most important tool also works equally well with this set and is the blower. The blower attaches to the motor the same way the edger and trimmer do, and it allows you to easily blow the clipping from mowing edging and trimming back into the yard and off your driveway.

Another essential to be ready for spring is a pressure washer. There are many brands, styles, and models, but for me, the best is a mid sized gas model. I am currently using the Karcher G 3025 OH, a 3000psi 2.5 GPM gas unit with a Honda engine. I love this pressure washer. It comes with 5 tips for every application imaginable. It has enough power to blast the through toughest driveway cleaning jobs, but is versatile enough that you can also use it for minor cleaning on decks, siding, and even cars.

Finally, every outdoor landscape needs a good hedge trimmer. I personally use a stand alone gas model, instead of the one made to attach to the trimmer motor we discussed earlier. While that is a great option for some people, I personally find it too bulky for normal use. I also don’t like to drag cords around the house, so I steer clear of the electric models as well, but understand that these are a great, lower cost alternative for many people, or for those who don’t like to deal with gas, oil, mixes, and maintenance.

With these few tools, you will be well equipped to keep your home looking great for years to come.

Is 12 Volts enough power?

I recently saw a survey from another power tool blogger asking the question, “Is 12 volts enough power?” In my previous life as a carpenter, I often preferred 12 volt tools to their heavier 18 volt counterparts. The 12 volt tools of my day were Ni-Cad, and basically full size drills, but light enough to be comfortable for all day use. With the release of the newer lithium-ion batteries I did finally switch to 18 volt drills, since they provided longer run times and more power, with virtually the same weight as the 12 volts I was used to. Now with the new compact “pocket drivers” having a smaller 12 volt lithium-ion battery, I’m in heaven. The new pocket drivers are phenomenal. They pack a ton of power into a tool that will easily fit into the pouch of your tool belt. In addition to your standard drill/driver, many manufacturers have released impact drivers in this new compact design that deliver an overwhelming 850 in-lbs. of torque in some cases. Bottom line: Not only are the new 12 volt pocket drivers lightweight and compact, they deliver more than adequate power for many basic applications.
